The Dexter Room at Oxford Registry Office was packed out with family and friends on one of the hottest days of last summer for this marriage ceremony. The heat did nothing to stifle the sheer elation and high spirits of this young crowd who were whooping and cheering as the couple married. I was lucky from the outset in that my bride was a natural beauty and her warmth of spirit shines through in the shots, from the moment she stepped into the register office to when I said my goodbyes at the end of a lovely evening. In my mind’s eye, I was imagining the events as they unfolded like some of the European weddings we have photographed over the years: very demonstrative, lots of hugs and kisses and the opposite of very English and reserved. The minute we stepped out into the bright sunshine on the steps of Oxford Registry Office, my overriding thought was to shoot all the emotional reactions, movement and colour, and capture people in a flattering light. Back in Kingham for the reception, we stopped off at the village green with its wonderful oaks and chestnuts in full leaf to take our group photos. Placing the family in shade, out of direct sunlight always produces such lovely results and I worked quickly and calmly so as not to keep people hanging about unnecessarily. We then walked across the green to the village hall and I dashed inside to photograph the long refectory tables with bunches of pale pink and deep pink peonies and fresh lime-green alchemilla while the guests had drinks outside in the garden. Then, I turned my attention to seeking out wonderful intimate portraits and interactions, while always looking for leafy shade to produce a flattering backdrop and soft, filtered light. During the speeches, I worked away to capture the emotional high points and laughter. Our hallmark wedding photography style is that nothing is manufactured or contrived, every response recorded by the camera is real and authentic and hopefully this is the essence of our style that our visually literate clients really understand and enjoy.
